Anyone with a website these days needs to be taking part in at least basic SEO. It’s no longer a suggestion; it’s a necessity. SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, is how website owners can get their site ranked in the search engines like Bing, Yahoo, and Google.

In a nutshell, SEO is all about getting a higher rank in search engine results, and of course that means more traffic, more leads, and ultimately more sales on the back end. Most large websites do the majority of their business with traffic coming from search engines, so you can get an idea of how important it is.

No matter what your level of experience with SEO may be, it’s always possible to get started with some of the basics. After all, everything has to start somewhere. Here are a few basics that will help you get started with your own SEO efforts on the right foot. Remember, if you never get started you’ll never get anywhere.

Monitor Everything

The only way to know if anything is working the way it should with SEO is to keep track of all the important analytic metrics. One of the most important metrics is a traffic overview. This gives you a broad but decent idea of how much your website traffic has increased since you began implementing your SEO tactics. But that’s not always enough. Another vital metric to keep track of it where your visitors are coming from, and if they’re arriving at your site through search engines, you need to know what keywords they’re searching for to get there. One of the best and easiest to use free tools for this is Google Analytics, but you can also get updates from Alexa or other services.

Use Keywords Wisely

Keywords go a long way when used right, but can actually hold you back if used incorrectly. The right way to use keywords is in your site content, including the page headings, but without overusing them to the point where the content looks artificial. This is known as keyword stuffing – stuffing random keywords into the middle of your text in the interests of attracting search engines. If there’s one thing Google knows though, it’s how to spot overtly fake keyword usage, and they will punish your site for doing it.

One of the most powerful SEO tools that is still in use today is a process known as backlinking. Backlinks are hyperlinks on other, related websites that direct traffic back to your own main site. These can come from blogs, forums, or advertisements, but what they do is show to search engines that you are popular enough for other people to link to you. If Google feels that a website is popular, they’ll boost them in the search engine rankings because it stands to reason that they must be providing informative, high quality content. It’s also good to use your keywords as the anchor text in your backlinks, but that’s a subject for another post.
